How it works

Small wireless sensors installed in the classroom, record energy, temperature, occupancy, and light levels. The device senses appliance and equipment activity and reports...

“We couldn’t believe it, our son came home from school and became the power police.”

Carol, Greythorn Primary School, Melbourne

Why participate?

Real Life Challenges

The Sustainability Cup presents real life challenges. The competitive aspect of the program ensures students rapidly understand and thoroughly search for opportunities to improve their performance; competitive fun while reinforcing sustainable behaviour.

“Student engagement was unbelievable. I was giving instructions using the overhead, the moment I finished I was berated by students for not turning it off sooner”.

Ken Darby, Year 6 Coordinator, Greythorn Primary School - Melbourne

Real Life Solutions

Our experience has been that students thrive in this real environment and quickly develop strategies to keep them ahead on the scoreboard.

“We don’t know what tomorrows jobs will look like, most will come from new industries, one thing we do know however, is that these jobs will in some way be linked to Sustainability”.

Bert Verhoven, Senior Lecturer, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Swinburne University of Technology

Real Reductions in Resource Usage

Average energy reductions of 83% have been demonstrated in schools running the Sustainability Cup program.

Although the program is primarily designed as an educational tool, the program could very well be the perfect school “fund raiser”. Many Primary schools are consistently seeing annual electricity bills in the $30,000 - $60,000 range, even a modest reduction will show substantial savings – year after year.

“It was amazing, our kids loved it, they discovered the use of windows, the ideas and creative thinking ended up with our class looking like a spaceship. It was all worth it, our kids won the Sustainability Cup”.

Nicole Freeman, Sustainability Educator, St Augustine’s College - Kyabram
